Choosing and Using a Fluoropolymer-Lined Butterfly Valve

A lined butterfly valve uses a rotating disc and a polymer-lined wetted arrangement. The metal shell and the lining have different roles: the shell provides the structural body, while the selected lining separates specified surfaces from the process fluid. Confirm which body, disc and sealing surfaces are actually lined. A lined design must not be confused with a butterfly valve that uses a multilayer metal sealing ring.

Confirm the Actual Lining Material

PTFE, FEP and PFA are distinct fluoropolymers. Identify the exact material and grade on the order documents rather than treating fluorine-lined as one universal specification. Material properties alone do not establish suitability of an assembled valve for a chemical mixture. Provide the medium, concentration, impurities and cleaning conditions for a product-specific review.

Use Assembly-Level Operating Limits

Check the selected valve’s pressure-temperature rating, lining and seal limits and required shutoff duty together. Do not transfer a resin temperature limit, a metal-body rating or another manufacturer’s product range to the complete valve. Vacuum, solids, cycling and flow-control requirements also need to be identified in the selection review. Lining does not establish universal corrosion resistance, abrasion resistance or a leakage guarantee.

Check the Installation Against the Selected Instructions

Use the approved valve drawing and installation instructions to confirm companion flanges, gasket requirements, fasteners and disc clearance. Protect lining surfaces during storage, handling and assembly. Misalignment or interference can damage a liner. Do not apply another model’s bolt torque, disc position or maintenance procedure as a universal rule.

Information to Provide Before Ordering

Identify the required valve size and connection, process and cleaning chemicals, operating conditions, lining coverage, shutoff or control duty and operating method. Request the product datasheet, assembly drawing and applicable inspection requirements. This guidance does not claim that every lined valve has the same construction or operating limits.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use any fluorine-lined butterfly valve for my chemical mixture?

No blanket compatibility should be assumed. Provide every process and cleaning chemical, concentration, pressure and temperature. Request confirmation of the complete lining, disc and seal arrangement for the selected valve.

Can I use the raw polymer temperature limit as the valve operating limit?

Do not use a resin property alone as the complete valve rating. Request the pressure-temperature limits of the actual valve assembly, including the lining, seals and other relevant components.

What should I check before installing a lined valve between existing flanges?

Obtain the selected valve's flange, gasket and fastener requirements and check pipe-bore and disc clearance. Protect the lining from damage and follow the approved model-specific instructions rather than a universal installation rule.
