Butterfly valves are compact quarter-turn valves with a rotating disc. Trekre’s current range includes wafer, lug and double-flange designs with manual, worm-gear, pneumatic and electric operation; select seat, lining, body and disc materials for the actual service.

Trekre Butterfly Valves Series

What Is a Butterfly Valve?

A butterfly valve is a compact quarter-turn valve that uses a rotating disc, shaft or stem, and seat to control flow. The disc turns between open and closed positions. Depending on the selected design, a butterfly valve can be used for isolation, and some configurations may also be considered for throttling where the valve design and service requirements support it.

Butterfly Valve Types Available

The current Trekre category includes wafer, lug, double-flange, welded, lined, resilient/soft-seated, metal-seated, double-eccentric, triple-offset, vacuum, sanitary and industrial configurations, with manual, worm-gear, pneumatic and electric operation.

Wafer, Lug and Flanged Connections

Wafer designs are installed between mating flanges. Lug designs use lugs around the valve body for the selected installation arrangement. Double-flange designs have flanged ends as part of the valve body. Choose the connection based on the piping arrangement, applicable flange standard, installation space, and selected product drawing.

Soft-Seated, Metal-Seated and Lined Designs

The current range includes resilient/soft-seated, metal-seated, and lined butterfly valves. Lined products identify PTFE, PFA, FEP, or EPDM-rubber-lined configurations on relevant product pages. Double-eccentric and triple-offset products are also present. These constructions are not interchangeable: confirm the selected seat, lining, disc, body, sealing arrangement, and service conditions with the specific product documentation.

Manual, Pneumatic and Electric Operation

Available operating methods include manual handles, worm gear operators, pneumatic actuators, and electric actuators. Select the operating method according to the required function, operating frequency, installation access, control requirements, and the selected valve design. Do not assume a common torque, switching time, or control accuracy across products.

How to Select a Butterfly Valve

  • Medium, pressure, temperature, size, and installation space
  • Wafer, lug, double-flange, welded, or other connection requirement
  • Body and disc material; seat or lining requirement
  • Isolation and any throttling requirement
  • Manual, worm-gear, pneumatic, or electric actuation
  • Applicable flange standard, operating frequency, inspection, and documentation needs

Final selection must be confirmed against the product datasheet, drawing, and order specification.

Typical Applications

Butterfly valves are used in industrial fluid systems where the selected connection, materials, seat or lining, operating method, and service conditions are appropriate. Water supply, process systems, and other industrial duties require product-specific review rather than a general compatibility claim.

Standards and Testing

Current product titles reference ANSI, JIS, DIN, EN, API 609, and ISO-related configurations. Available standards vary by valve design and product series; confirm the applicable datasheet, drawing, inspection scope, and order specification for the selected product. Trekre’s About page presents pressure-testing, PMI, material-verification, and inspection equipment. For additional background, visit Valve Technical Knowledge.

FAQ

What is a butterfly valve?

A butterfly valve uses a rotating disc to control flow through a valve body. It is a quarter-turn design used for isolation and, where suitable, selected throttling duties.

What is the difference between wafer and lug butterfly valves?

Wafer and lug designs use different body and installation arrangements. Select the connection using the piping layout, flange arrangement, product drawing, and service requirements.

How do I select a butterfly valve seat or lining?

Review the medium, pressure, temperature, disc and body materials, seat or lining construction, and selected product documentation. Material names alone are not enough for a final selection.

When should I use soft-seated or metal-seated butterfly valves?

The appropriate design depends on the valve construction and service conditions. Confirm the sealing arrangement and product limits for the selected series.

Can butterfly valves be used for throttling?

Some designs may be considered for throttling, but suitability depends on the valve construction, disc/seat arrangement, flow conditions, and required control performance.

What is the difference between manual, pneumatic, and electric butterfly valves?

They differ in operating method. Selection depends on access, operation frequency, automation requirements, control needs, and the compatible valve design.

What information is required when ordering a butterfly valve?

Provide the medium, pressure, temperature, size, connection, materials, seat or lining requirement, valve function, actuation, applicable standard, and inspection or documentation needs.
