Worm Gear Wafer Soft Seal Butterfly Valve D371X Ductile Iron Stainless Disc Specifications

The worm gear wafer soft seal butterfly valve D371X is a quarter-turn shutoff and throttling valve for water, air, light oil and general industrial fluids where a compact wafer body and reduced hand effort on larger bores are required. Trekre & Fouten Valve supplies this D371X gear-operated wafer butterfly valve with ductile iron, carbon steel or stainless wafer bodies, stainless or rubber-faced discs, and resilient NBR, EPDM or FKM seat rings for municipal distribution, building HVAC, fire protection, wastewater and utility piping. The wafer body installs between two companion flanges; through bolts or studs clamp the valve so the line carries end loads while the valve keeps a short face-to-face length in crowded plant rooms, vertical shafts and packaged skids.

Centerline soft seal and wafer layout

Centerline butterfly valves locate the stem on the disc center line so rotation stays balanced in the bore. On closing, the disc edge compresses the elastomer seat to form a peripheral seal; on opening, the disc leaves the seat quickly, which limits seat wear on clean water and air compared with some high-offset hard-sealed designs. The D371X series uses resilient sealing between a metal or rubber-lined disc and a molded seat ring. Confirm the complete model code, disc overlay and seat compound on the approved drawing and purchase order before installation.

Wafer-style bodies fit between pipeline flanges without integral end flanges on the valve. Locating lugs or through holes align with the bolt circle per GB/T 12238, HG/T 20592, ANSI B16.5 or the project flange standard. Integrators must verify gasket type, bolt length, stud versus through-bolt arrangement, and that flange faces are parallel so the wafer body is not twisted during tightening. Face-to-face dimensions stay shorter than double-flanged butterfly valves, which helps spool-piece retrofits and skid assembly.

Worm gear operation and stroke control

A worm gear box converts slow handwheel rotation into a 90-degree disc stroke from fully open to fully closed. The reduction ratio lowers input torque on DN200 and larger lines and on higher differential-pressure duties where a lever handle would be impractical. Many gear units include a mechanical stop, position indicator or dial so operators can read approximate open percentage without counting turns. Gear direction and handwheel location can often be adjusted at the factory to suit floor, platform or overhead access.

For lines that need frequent cycling, remote indication or interlocking with controls, compare this manual D371X configuration with electric wafer soft seal or pneumatic wafer alternatives on the same nominal size and flange class. When automation is added later, confirm stem height, keyway or square drive, and mounting flange patterns against the actuator supplier drawing so the gear housing does not conflict with the actuator base.

Materials, seats and temperature limits

Body castings are commonly QT450-10 ductile iron for cost-effective water and HVAC service, with WCB carbon steel or CF8/CF8M stainless when specifications require higher strength or corrosion resistance. Disc options include stainless plate in SS304 or SS316, ductile iron with rubber lining, or cast steel with corrosion-resistant facing. Stem material is typically stainless or equivalent alloy steel with packing suited to the stated temperature and medium.

Seat elastomers are matched to medium and temperature: NBR suits many water, air and light hydrocarbon duties within roughly -20 °C to 80 °C depending on compound batch data; EPDM supports hot water, ozone-resistant HVAC loops and some weak acids within roughly -30 °C to 120 °C; FKM compounds extend chemical and temperature headroom where the inquiry confirms compatibility. Coating on iron bodies is usually epoxy or project-specified paint. Potable-water or food-contact compounds are supplied only when the inquiry names the required approval or test method.

Pressure, size range and standards

Typical nominal pressure ratings are PN10 and PN16 on ductile iron and steel body options; Class 150 flange systems are quoted separately and are not interchangeable with PN ratings without engineering review. Nominal size coverage commonly spans DN40 through DN600 in standard production, with larger or special combinations evaluated per order. Manufacturing and inspection references often include GB/T 12238 for butterfly valves, API 609 Category A for resilient seated types, and GB/T 13927 or API 598 shell and seat tests as named on the order. Allowable seat leakage follows the agreed standard and appears on the factory test report rather than as an unstated verbal guarantee.

Typical applications

The D371X worm gear wafer soft seal butterfly valve serves isolation and coarse flow control on chilled and hot water loops, cooling tower lines, fire protection test and zone headers, paper mill white-water recirculation, irrigation mains and general plant utility piping where elastomer sealing is acceptable at operating temperature and pressure. Bidirectional sealing is common on centerline soft-seal designs; still follow any flow-direction markings and installation instructions supplied with the valve.

It is not a replacement for triple-offset metal seated valves on high-temperature steam, abrasive slurry or severe cavitation duty. For those services, review hard-sealed wafer or flanged butterfly formats and confirm disc overlay, actuator torque and test methods on the data sheet before purchase.

Installation, storage and maintenance

Install where the handwheel remains accessible and flange bolts can be tightened in a cross pattern so the wafer body stays centered. Avoid hanging heavy adjacent piping on the valve body beyond the flange design. Before first operation after storage, exercise the valve slowly and check the packing gland for weeping; adjust packing evenly if needed. Keep elastomer seats protected from ozone, direct sunlight and compression set during long-term storage by leaving the disc slightly off the seat and keeping internals dry.

When should I choose D371X instead of a lever handle wafer soft seal valve?

Use worm gear D371X when nominal size, differential pressure or operator access makes a lever handle impractical. Lever-handle D72X-style valves remain suitable on smaller bores and lower torque water and air lines where occasional manual operation is enough.

Can the worm gear box be replaced or upgraded to electric actuation?

Many wafer bodies accept alternate operators if stem dimensions and torque match the actuator supplier catalog. Send stem diameter, key or square size, required torque and flange details with the inquiry so mounting interfaces are verified before shipment.

What should I include in an RFQ to a China valve manufacturer?

State medium, temperature, pressure, nominal size, flange standard, seat material preference, coating requirements, quantity and required test documents. Attach a flange detail or isometric so wafer bolt length and hole pattern are confirmed before production.
